A light afternoon rain came off the North Sea while we were walking around the Upper Town of Brussels, Belgium.  It was the perfect opportunity for us to visit the Royal Museum of Fine Art of Belgium.  For hours, my wife and I wandered the galleries full of old masters and modern masterpieces.  Around ever corner was a source of inspiration including this small piece.  While the details, coloring, and layout vary, the sense of feeling is the same.  For more on Brussels, Belgium, please visit: http://mikekraus.blogspot.com/2017/09/sprout-to-be-brussels.html

Mike Kraus was born on the industrial shoreline of Muskegon, Michigan. After earning his Fine Arts Degree from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, he attended Grand Valley State University for his graduate degree. From there, he gained varied experiences from the Chicago Architecture Foundation, Art Institute of Chicago, Hauenstein Center For Presidential Studies, Lollypop Farm Humane Society, and the Children's Memorial Foundation. And every place he worked, he had his sketchbook with him and found ways to be actively creative. In 2014, Kraus became a full-time artist by establishing Mike Kraus Art. Since then, he has sold hundreds of paintings that are displayed in nearly every state and dozens of countries. Currently, Kraus lives in Rochester, New York with his beautiful wife and goofy dog.

A Very Full Day In Ghent

WELCOME TO
GHENT!
After reviewing our trip, we agreed that Ghent was the best surprise of our trip.  And, we almost didn't stop here.  While planning the trip, we asked people, "what should be do in Belgium," and a surprising amount of locals and travelers told us "Go to Ghent."  So, we did.  And after being there, we wish we would have spent at least two nights instead of just one.  I guess it will just have to be our excuse to go back.

Arriving at the Ghent St. Pieters station (http://www.belgianrail.be/en/stations-and-train/search-a-station/11/gent-sint-pieters.aspx), this is the first thing you see.

Korenmarkt is the center to historic Ghent.  In the 1300s, it had a population of 65,000 and the second largest city north of the alps.  And two-thirds of that population worked in the textile industry because of the wool trade.  Belgian cities tend to have on large market square.  But, Ghent was too large for that and was designed to have squares scattered through the city that specialized in various trades.  So, Korenmarkt is the "corn" or "grain" market.

Looks like an impressive medieval building, right?  It's not that old.  The former Post Office was completed in 1910.  Today, it houses several clothing stores, grocery, cafe, and other amenities.

St. Nicholas with the Belfry.

St. Nikolaas met het Belfort.

Saint Nicolas au Beffroi.

St. Nicholas is the patron saint of sailors.  Appropriate for a couple reasons.  One, this wealthy city shipped the limestone by river all the way from Tournai (roughly 50 miles (81 kilometers).  Two, the wool and other goods sold here were shipped overseas.

In the 15-16th century, Ghent's economy waned and they stopped using the imported limestone and exchanged it with local sandstone.  Also, much of the interior decorations of the church was destroyed by Calvinist Protestants in the 1500s as part of the Protestant Reformation.  What you see today are new decorations provided by the Counter-Reformation.

This is where the business of Ghent took place.  Boats carrying goods up the Leie and Schelde Rivers would stop here.

In 1976, this building was being renovated.  Part of the brick facade was removed and it revealed the original structure from the 1400s.  Instead of demolition, the building front was restored and given whimsical dancing statues.

This use to be a parking lot.  In the heart of the city was a hot, smelly, noisy desert of asphalt.  Today, there's a grassy park for people to gather.  That leads into a cafe, public restrooms, and a bicycle center.  All of this is capped with a contemporary shelter with a twin-gabled timber roof that pays homage to the historic architecture.

Light filters through the glass and timbers of the shelter.

This is a public space of constant activity.  Every time we walked by, there were kids playing, food trucks, tourists taking a break, or musicians.  We saw several pianos in public places in Belgium.  And there is no shortage of talented piano players.

The belfry's tower was constructed in the 1300s to protect a "favored privileges" documents from the Counts of Flanders.  But, not all of it.  The top portion with the clock was an addition from 1913 when Ghent hosted the World's Fair.

Below the Belfry is Cloth Hall.  Construction started in 1425 and mostly completed 20 years later.  But the original plans were finally completed in 1903.  Better late than never...  Everything relating to the important textile industry happened here.  If there was a trade deal, negotiation, transaction, inspection, complaint, or whatever relating to cloth, this was the place.

The Royal Dutch Theater.  Belgium's great divide is between the Dutch and the French.  It is, after all, squeezed between the two nations.  And it's been a battleground between them as well as other nations like Spain and the Habsburgs in Austria.  So, after separating from the Netherlands in 1830, the Dutch majority fell under the control of the French minority.  In 1899, this theater was constructed to give the Dutch a place to showcase their culture.

The Royal Dutch Theatre.

Town Hall is more than just a place to conduct official business.  It was constructed in the time of kings.  But, Ghent had a special deal with the Counts of Flanders that allowed them a degree of self-rule.  To celebrate this unique arrangement, they constructed this building in the 1500s.

The success of self-rule was evident a century later when this Neoclassical addition (on the right) was constructed in the 1600s.

This is a wonderful example of the European model for problem solving.  Graffiti use to be a problem for Ghent and its many historic structures.  But, instead of outlawing graffiti and having police waste their time and energy on enforcement, they designated an area for graffiti, which has become an attraction.  Of course, there are examples of this in many city in the US and around the world.  But, it's a way of thinking that needs to be used more.

Van Artevelde was just a regular guy in the 1300s.  But, like most of Belgian history, Ghent was caught between two superpowers being belligerent.  The English king decided to punish the French, who controlled the Ghent, by not exporting wool.  Incredibly, this businessman with no title talked directly with the English king and convinced him that Ghent was neutral in their conflict with the French.  As a tribute, some locals refer to Ghent as "Artevelde City."

Remember earlier that I mentioned the Town Hall was a tribute to Ghent's self-rule?  Well, Gravensteen Castle is a tribute to foreign oppression.  Philip of Alsace saw the Krak des Chevaliers in Syria during the Second Crusade and decided to build a similar structure just outside of the city of Ghent to enforce his rule over the city.  Eventually, Charles V became the Holy Roman Emperor and made his demands from Spain.  One of the demands was a large tribute, which the citizens rejected.  With the rejection, Charles V went to Ghent personally, had nooses placed on citizens necks, made them stand on their knees, beg for forgiveness, and give him the large sum of money.  This is how citizens of Ghent earned the nickname "noose bearers."

Ghent lies on the confluence of the Lys (female) and Scheldt (male) rivers.  That is why the city is know as the river's child.  And, to honor those hydro-parents, they constructed this facade to the Old Fish Market.

The medieval Butchers Hall use to be the only place in town to purchase meat until the 1800s.  This was because of health reasons.  And, not only are the rafters beautiful, but it's impressive when you realize that they are constructed entirely without nails.

(http://www.sintbaafskathedraal.be/en/index.html)

A structure has stood here since 942.  And this cathedral was constructed from about 1350 - 1559.

Standing here, it's hard to believe this tower stands at only 292 feet (89 meters) high.  And imagine the feat of engineering and construction it took to do this without power tools and other equipment that is standard issue today.

Again, like the vast majority of churches in the region, the original Gothic decorations were destroyed by the Calvinist Protestants during the Reformation.  What decorations you do see in this massive 100 foot (30 meter) nave was reintroduced in the 1800s.

The widespread destruction of the Calvinist Protestants means there's almost no Gothic stained glass in all of Belgium.  What is seen today has been replaced from the Counter-Reformation to today.

This is saint Bavo.  He was a wealthy nobleman from Belgium.  A soldier, with a wife and family, that was known as a "party animal."  After his wife died, he heard a sermon about materialism and decided to be a Christian.  While wandering around as a missionary, he bumped into a man that he has sold into slavery.  Feeling ashamed and seeking forgiveness, he bound himself in chains and had the former slave drag him to the local jail.  Later, he had an abbey constructed on his estate in Ghent, where he became a recluse monk until his death.  PS - For a time, as a monk, he lived in a hollow tree.

Sometimes, what is lost can be found.  The Calvinist Protestants whitewashed the crypt as part of their purging of religious items.  And, over the centuries, things were forgotten.  But, it the 1930s, some of that paint was removed to reveal these paintings from the 1400s hidden underneath.

The main attraction of St. Bavo's Cathedral: The Ghent Altarpiece (image from: https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2013/dec/20/ghent-altarpiece-most-stolen-artwork-of-all-time).  The painting was started by Hubert van Eyck.  During the creation of this massive 11 foot by 15 foot (3.35 meter by 4.57 meter) piece, he passed away and his brother Jan completed it in 1432.  There are hundreds of figures painted on a dozen panels that weighs over a ton (907 kilograms).  So, there's a lot to see.

So, who are we looking at?  The far left and far right at the top are Adam and Eve.  These are most likely the first nudes painted north of the Alps.  These panels were covered up in the 1800s with replicas with cloths by prudish members of the church.  Interestingly enough, it wasn't their nudity, exactly, that they disliked.  It was the honestly of their bodies that was so offensive.  Particularly Eve's small legs with a bit of a belly and Adam's very detailed leg hair.  These people found that imperfection embarrassing and tried to hide it.

The panels next to Adam and Eve are choir angels.  And it was very unusual that these angels didn't have wings, halos, and individualized faces.

The woman in the blue robe is Mary and the man in green is John the Baptist.  And, in red, is the big man himself; God.

The bottom panels are essentially a collection of who's who from the Bible showing up for the adoration and sacrifice of Jesus.

If that wasn't enough, the whole thing folds up and has painted exterior panels.  I can't do it justice here, so you'll just have to trust me, but every tiny detail of this painting is a symbol, message, or has an inscription.  It's really something that need to be seen in person and given time to contemplate.  A task that is difficult when you're in a small room crammed full of tourists.

So, what makes this piece so famous?  1) It's the first piece Jan van Eyck signed. 2) The elaborate detail and odd perspective make it one of the first Flemish Primitive paintings. 3) The archaic medieval style of northern Europe give way to the humanism of the Renaissance.

The real miracle is that we can see this piece at all.  The altarpiece was a prime target of the Calvinist Protestants during the Reformation.  It was to be burned and destroyed like everything else in the church.  But, the priests hid it in the church's tower.  Strange they didn't find it since that's the religious equivalent to hiding it under the bed.  Then from 1794 - 1815, the central panels were at the Louvre in Paris as Napoleon claimed it as the spoils of war.  Then the King of Prussia took several panels in 1821.  But wait, Germany was required to return those panels as a part of the Treaty of Versailles to end the first World War.  In 1934, the bottom left panel was stolen.  World War II breaks out and Hitler decides he wants it and bounces between the Allies and Nazis (Watch the movie Monuments Men (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2177771/) for more details on that exciting story).  The Allies win World War II and the entire altarpiece (except for the stolen bottom left panel) are returned to St. Bavo's.  And it doesn't end there.  A Flemish banker is the main suspect of that stolen panel and his last words were that he is the only person that knows where the panel is hidden.  And the police still get actionable tips on the case, like in 2008 when police tore open a large section of a parking garage looking for it.  And that's why it's called "the most stolen artwork of all time."

Dulle Griet (Mad Meg) (http://www.dullegriet.be/nl/) was a fun stop.  If you order a "max," which you see a couple really tall glasses at the far table, you have to give them one of your shoes that will hang from a ceiling in a basket until you're done.  They are serious.  It's a two person operation.  So, I wonder how many of these glasses were stolen before that tradition started?  Is that why Meg is mad?

You may have noticed that many of the pubs we've visited have lots of beers.  You may have also noticed that no two beers have the same glass.  Megan and I discussed the logistics of storing, serving, and cleaning such a wide variety glassware.  This bar answered so many of our questions as it was the most exposed.  Yet, it only lead me to more questions as I'm use to getting charged a lot more to be served lesser beer in smaller standard glasses from a tap.

Such good Turkish food.  And it's fun to argue with Megan about whether I ordered fish or chicken.  And her dish was amazing.

Zo'n goed Turks eten.

Something that Megan and I realized was Belgium really loves exterior lighting on their buildings.  Usually when we find ourselves in a new place, we do a little walking tour to get ourselves acquainted with the city.  In Belgium, we did the same thing.  But, we'd redo the tour again later to see it's beauty at night.

Before leaving town, Megan and I did a little wandering around.  We decided to see what was south of the historic district before boarding our train.

That baby doesn't seem too please with those foxes.

Vooruit (https://vooruit.be/nl/) is an arts center that was highly suggested we'd visit while in town.  Unfortunately, there weren't any activities scheduled while we were there.  But, what little we saw from the outside looked like a lot of fun.

We walked down to Our Lady of St. Peter's (https://sintpietersabdij.stad.gent/).

We liepen naar Onze-Lieve-Vrouw van St. Peter's (https://sintpietersabdij.stad.gent/).

Nous sommes descendus à Notre-Dame de Saint-Pierre (https://sintpietersabdij.stad.gent/).

Just to show you that Belgium isn't stuck in its past glory, but looking forward to a bright and exciting future, this is their new city library De Krook (http://dekrook.be/)

As a part of the 1913 World's Fair, King Albert I unveiled this memorial to the Van Eyck brothers that painted the Ghent Altarpiece in St. Bavo's Cathedral, directly behind them.

It'd be pretty terrifying to see a lion with wings.

So many wonderful ornate doorways.

Zo veel prachtige sierlijke deuropeningen.

Beaucoup de portes ornées merveilleuses.

HARRY POTTER FANS!  Just so you know, there is a Belgian version of the Leaky Cauldron.  Just saying...

HARRY POTTER FANATICI!

The Erasmus Hotel (http://www.erasmushotel.be/) was a wonderful place to stay.  It was so convenient to all the sights, clean, nice breakfast, quiet, and even had a little courtyard.  And the Spar (http://spar-international.com/) next door was actually very useful for snacks and keeping hydrated.  For only having 12 rooms, it feels very grand, but not pretentious.

Back at Ghent St. Pieters station (http://www.belgianrail.be/en/stations-and-train/search-a-station/11/gent-sint-pieters.aspx) on our way to Bruges.  This time, we're leaving from the new part of the train station, which is a gift waiting to be unwrapped still.  I'm very impressed with how Belgium has been able to preserve their history and build world-class infrastructure.  They are clearly preparing for a bright future.
